The new year has gotten off to a raucous start thanks to the best and brightest in the rugby universe, with no small part in that thanks to the quality of crunching tackles on display.

This past week featured a clash of the French titans, as Clermont travelled to Toulouse in an attempt to get an edge over their fellow Top 14 title contenders, while Northampton Saints and Harlequins saw out an extremely physical battle at Franklin's Gardens.

Audiences also had the all-Italian encounter of Zebre and Treviso to take pleasure in, not to mention a whole raft of other collision-filled European fixtures.

With the 2014 Super Rugby season just around the corner, it won't be long before the Southern Hemisphere is back in on the action.

Having said that, for now, their northern counterparts are doing a fine job as we run through the biggest hits in world rugby this week.
