There were great scores to had out on the North Course at Torrey Pines on Friday. One of Tiger Woods' playing partners, Jordan Spieth, showed that with his 63.

It was generally assumed Woods would carve out one of those after a so-so round of 72 Thursday on the South Course. After all, the world's best player had won eight times on this venue.

Everybody was shocked, however, when hit the easier North Course and posted a very pedestrian one-under par 71. He made two birdies on the front, followed that with eight straight pars on the back and then, to put an even more bitter taste in his mouth, bogeyed the par fifth final hole.

Woods' first two rounds leave him in a very difficult position in his attempt to post win No. 9 at Torrey Pines.

He'll need to make a lot of birdies on the South Course Saturday and Sunday and that layout does not generally yield birdies by the bunches. Perhaps even more importantly, Woods' game doesn't appear to be in sufficient shape to make a big charge.
